June 25-28 Homestand Preview, Alumni Report

The Kane County Cougars, Class-A farm team of the Chicago Cubs, open a four-game homestand Tuesday against the Beloit Snappers, an Oakland Athletics farm team.  The upcoming homestand includes a Day Camp Day on Wednesday, Ron Santo Night on Thursday and a commemorative Ozzie Cubs Bobblehead giveaway on Friday. Homestand Notes

First homestand of season’s second half: The Cougars commence the home portion of their second half season with a four-game homestand against Beloit. Highlights include a special Day Camp Day on Wednesday with discounted tickets for day camp groups, and a pre-game day camp parade and autograph session. Ron Santo Night on Thursday will include a special raffle of a commemorative 1969 #10 Cubs jersey, and a post-game Cubs-themed fireworks show. Friday’s game will include one of the most highly-anticipated promotional giveaways of the season as the first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive an Ozzie Cubs Bobblehead, courtesy of Presence Mercy Medical Center. Gates open at 5:15 p.m. that evening and following the final out, fans will enjoy a fireworks show.


Thirsty Thursday: Fans attending the Thursday June 27th game can enjoy $1 select beers, small sodas, and even hot dogs from when the gates open at 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Remembering Ron: The Cougars will pay tribute to the late Ron Santo at Thursday night’s game. A replica 1969 #10 jersey will be raffled off during the game, with all proceeds being donated to JDRF. Ron Santo, Jr. will be in attendance and escort a JDRF representative to field level for a ceremonial first pitch.

Team News: The Cougars (0-4, 30-40) were swept by Quad Cities in a four-game set to open the season’s second half. The team is currently 10 games under .500 – its low-water mark for the season.  Infielder Rock Shoulders leads the Midwest League with 14 home runs. The single-season franchise record is held by Jason Stokes (’02) with 27 home runs. Infielder Bijan Rademacher is 6th in the league with a .318 batting average. Infielder Dan Vogelbach had a pair of hits in last Tuesday’s Midwest League All-Star Game. Catcher Willson Contreras is batting .350 in his last 10 games and Shoulders is batting .353 in his last 10 games.  Pitcher Michael Heesch has worked at least 6 innings in his last 6 starts. Through 26 games as a Cougar, outfielder Albert Almora is batting .361.

Alumni News: Detroit Tigers infielder Miguel Cabrera (’01 Cougar) leads Major League Baseball in batting average (.370), RBI (75) and is 4th in home runs (20). Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz (’03) is tied for 6th in the big leagues with 19 home runs. Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Adrian Gonzalez (’01) is batting .301 with 47 RBI. Pittsburgh pitcher A.J. Burnett (’98) has a 3.12 ERA with 99 strikeouts while teammate Vin Mazzaro (’06) has a 3.06 ERA in 25 relief appearances. San Francisco pitcher Santiago Casilla (’03-’04) has a 1.89 ERA in 21 appearances.  Washington pitcher Ian Krol (’10), who made his big league debut on June 5, has not allowed an earned run in 8 appearances.  Cubs pitcher Henry Rodriguez (’07) has made 3 appearances since being traded from Washington.

Players named to the Double-A Texas League All-Star Game include Orlando Calixte (’11), Angel Franco (’11), Santiago Garrido (’11-’12), Anthony Aliotti (’10), Dusty Coleman (’09), and Murphy Smith (’09-’10). Aliotti is batting .358 for Double-A Midland (Oakland) through 73 games. Infielder Jeff Baisley (’06) is batting .304 for Acereros del Norte in the Mexican League while infielder Alex Valdez (’07) is batting .335 with Delfines de Ciudad del Carmen. Infielder Justin Sellers (’06) is batting .380 at Triple-A Albuquerque (Los Angeles Dodgers). Pitcher Travis Banwart (’07-’08) is 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 16 games at Triple-A Sacramento (Oakland). Pitcher Sam Demel (’07) has a 1.41 ERA at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (New York Yankees). Pitcher Yordano Ventura (’11) is 2-1 with a 5.49 ERA at Triple-A Omaha (Kansas City). Outfielder Javier Herrera (’05) is batting .307 with 9 home runs and 39 RBI at Double-A Richmond (San Francisco). Pitcher Scott Alexander (’12) is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA since being promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas (Kansas City). Pitcher Kyle Smith (’12) is 4-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 13 games at Class-A Advanced Wilmington (Kansas City). Pitcher Chas Byrne (’11), who combined for a no-hitter with the Cougars in 2011, is 3-0 at Class-A Lexington (Kansas City). 2012 Cougars Player of the Year Jorge Bonifacio (’12) has been out since mid-May with a broken bone in his hand.  (Statistics through games played on June 23)
