Cougars Homestand Preview: April 19-24

The Cougars open a six-game homestand on Thursday. The homestand includes a pair of autograph sessions this weekend, a magnetic schedule giveaway on Friday and Saturday and Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Day on Saturday. Homestand Notes

Organ/Tissue Donor Awareness Day set for Saturday: Fans attending Saturday’s Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Day can sign up to be an organ and tissue donor through Gift of Hope, and have a chance to win a Cougars team autographed bat. People who already have registered to be organ and tissue donors can show their driver’s license to provide proof of registration and be eligible. Heartland Blood Centers will also hold a community blood drive outside the stadium Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Also in conjunction with Gift of Hope, the Cougars will honor several families who have been touched by organ and tissue donation, through an on-field ceremony before the game.

More theme nights coming: The Cougars’ May The Fourth Be With You Star Wars Night is set for Friday, May 4. Fans are encouraged to dress in character, take part in a pre-game parade and ballpark scavenger hunt, and enjoy a Star Wars-themed fireworks show following the game. Members of the Midwest Garrison will be on hand to pose for photos as well. The May 11 and 12 games will be the Cougars’ Halfway to Halloween Nights, with pre-game trick-or-treating, a costume parade and contest, along with Halloween-themed fireworks shows following both games. Team News: After taking three of four games at Burlington, the Cougars (6-4) open a three-game series at Beloit this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. with a doubleheader. Yesterday’s game was postponed due to inclement weather…Jorge Bonifacio is batting .410 to rank fourth in the Midwest League…River Grove native Mike Giovenco has made three appearances and allowed just one run over five innings…Cougars starting pitcher Aaron Brooks is 2-0 to open the ’12 campaign…fellow starter and converted reliever Edwin Carl has posted a 4.32 ERA in two starts…the Cougars as a team are second-highest in the league with a .285 team batting average.  Alumni News:  Minnesota outfielder Josh Willingham (’01) was named American League Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .455 with 3 home runs. His .419 average is tops in the AL…Arizona pitcher Trevor Cahill (’07) won his first game as a Diamondback on Sunday, a game that featured 45 MPH wind gusts and a wind chill of 33 degrees in Colorado…Boston pitcher Josh Beckett (’00) opened the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park in fine fashion on Friday, picking up the win while scattering six hits over eight innings…Milwaukee shortstop Alex Gonzalez (‘96) smacked a home run in his return to Atlanta last Friday…Philadelphia pitcher Joe Blanton (’04) returned to the mound as a Phillies starter for the first time since last May on Thursday, allowing three hits over seven innings…Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier (’03) has 15 RBI, second-best in the NL behind teammate Matt Kemp…a pair of former Cougars are batting better than .300 at Triple-A Sacramento: Jermaine Mitchell (’07) is batting at a .313 clip while Stephen Parker (’09) is batting .308…Dan Straily (’10) has posted a 1.86 ERA in two starts at Double-A Midland…Greg Billo (’11) is 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA in two starts at Class-A Advanced Wilmington; fellow starter Jason Adam (’11) has allowed one earned run in two starts at Wilmington…pitcher Bo Schultz (’10) is 3-for-3 in save situations at Class-A  Advanced Visalia, an Arizona affiliate…Jeff Baisley (’06) has two home runs in 11 games at Triple-A Albuquerque, a Dodgers farm team…Jason Christian (’08-’10) opened the season at Class-A Advanced Bakersfield, a Reds affiliate…Mickey Storey (’09) opened the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City, a Houston affiliate and has made four relief appearances (statistics through games played on 4/15).

    Not so much a comment as a question…any plans to sell the great looking ‘KC’ caps that the Cougars have been wearing since they switched affiliations to Kansas City? I’d love to add one to my collection (especially a Twins ’47 brand if those are on the way).
