Hodge podge

Hello Cougars fans,

Some warm and fuzzy news relative to former Cougars in spring training, along with other assorted items. It’s the best medicine we can provide on a chilly and cloudy day here at the yard, right?

’08 Cougar and Oakland A’s second baseman Jemile Weeks is bending the ear of someone who probably has some good insight on playing the game: new Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin. Click HERE to read the feature story from the San Jose Mercury News. Keep in mind that for as many players the A’s unloaded this off-season, Jemile Weeks was the one ‘hands-off” player that the A’s refused to part with.

This note is unfortunately neither warm nor fuzzy as a former Cougar suffered a setback after just settling into his new digs with the Pirates. That would be pitcher A.J. Burnett, who suffered an orbital fracture after a bunt attempt caromed off his face. There’s no immediate timeframe on his return. Burnett (pictured below) is the Cougars’ single-season leader for strikeouts, with 186 punchouts in 1998.

We had a great response from a Leap Day ticket special yesterday. For one-day only, fans could receive 29% off a nightly suite rental for an April or May game. The unique promotion kept the phones busy as 20 suites for various games in those two months were ordered by the end of the day. Thanks to all of our fans who took advantage! That was a $116 discount off the normal price for a suite at a Cougars game.

It was great to catch up today with Cougars clubhouse manager Scott Anderson, who is down at the Royals spring training complex in Surprise, Arizona. Scott assures us that he has a better tan than any of us here at the park, and it was nice of him to offer to send some photos from camp here in the weeks ahead. Soon, very soon, camp for all players in the Royals’ system will commence.

Keep counting down until April 9! And thanks for reading.
